A new Lee Daniels drama is set to premiere Tuesday, Sept. 21. The Our Kind of People, starring former Chicago Med star Yaya DaCosta, will introduce audiences to the Black affluent community of Oak Bluffs.
In the Bluffs, both money and legacy reign supreme. The area is home to a tight-knit community whose roots are deep and intertwined. It’s not a place where outsiders are welcomed easily though Angela Vaughn (DaCosta) isn’t a wallflower or a shy woman.
Confident and ambitious, Angela sees her move to the Bluffs as an opportunity for her and her daughter, Nikki, to rise and reach for their dreams. Angela’s hair care business is thriving, and she intends to take it to the next level with the help and influence of the Oak Bluffs residents.
There is, however, a snag in her plans when it becomes apparent that one of the Bluffs’ most powerful figures isn’t too fond of her arrival. Leah Franklin Dupont (Nadine Ellis) and her husband Raymond (Morris Chesnut) are the crème de la crème of their community.
Raised to be the shepherds and stewards of the Bluffs, it’s their voices along with their parents’ that carry the most weight. If Angela can’t get in good with them then she won’t stand a chance. But what the Duponts don’t know is that this savvy businesswoman is holding onto a secret that could tear their empire down in one foul swoop.

This drama series isn’t a Netflix original, so it won’t be premiering on the streamer. Instead, viewers will be able to tune in on Tuesday, Sept. 21 when the series makes its debut on Fox at 9 p.m. right after The Resident‘s fifth season premiere.
