The day we’ve all been waiting for has finally come! Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is now streaming all six episodes on Netflix. Us fans have been eager for the Regency-set series ever since Netflix announced it would be happening. If you’ve watched the first episode already, you might be wondering what a certain word means.
*Spoilers for Queen Charlotte episode 1 below*
The premiere jumps right into things as we see a young Charlotte on her way to her wedding to King George, though she’s never met him. Immediately, it’s clear how strong-willed and headstrong this young royal is. But did we really expect anything less from the fan-favorite queen?
Of course, Charlotte is reluctant to marry someone she doesn’t know. And since she arrived in England, the king didn’t come out to meet her and the staff won’t give her any details about his looks or personality. As she tries her hand at climbing the wall to escape, he appears and gives such a lovely speech that had our hearts, and hers, melting!
The two get married and for a while, the newly wedded couple is happy celebrating their marriage and union. However, George surprises Charlotte at the end of the night and tells her they’re going to stay in two separate houses, or castles we should say. He won’t budge and Charlotte is left alone and confused on their wedding night.
Before all of this, you may have noticed the young queen’s brother, Adolphus, call her the word Liebchen. What does it mean? We’ve got the answer for you below!
In the first episode of the Queen Charlotte series, Adolphus calls his sister Liebchen twice. So what does the word mean? Well, the magnificent monarch hails from Germany, her full name Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. “Liebchen” is a German word that is a term of endearment, meaning a person who is very dear to another.
The first time Adolphus calls his sister Liebchen is in the carriage at the beginning of the episode as the two are making their way to England. Charlotte (rightfully) complains about being taken away from her home and not wanting to marry the King of England, while her brother argues that this is her duty and he couldn’t refuse the British Empire.
The second time is when he finds Charlotte and George talking after she tries to escape and go over the wall. She’d gone missing and everyone was looking for her. But then there’s nothing to worry about after the king’s sweet speech. That is until the end of the episode. But don’t worry, the two royals will work things out!
