Freema Agyeman is a vital part of New Amsterdam‘s DNA. Her turn as Dr. Helen Sharpe was compelling and authentic from her first episode to her last. It didn’t take long for fans to detect the chemistry between Agyeman and her frequent screen partner Ryan Eggold, who plays Dr. Max Goodwin on the show.
At the time of Max’s return to the hospital, Helen is working as the Chair of Hematology and Medical Oncology, she often assists with treating Max for his cancer and creating a detailed treatment plan for him. Throughout her four seasons on the show, Helen and Max bonded and became incredibly close, eventually forming a romantic connection. “Sharpwin” became one of the most popular pairings on the show.
Now that New Amsterdam season 5 is finally on Netflix, fans might be dismayed to realize Freema Agyeman is no longer on the show. She exited at the end of season 4. Why did Agyeman leave the NBC series? And how does her exit impact Helen’s storyline?

In her statement, Agyeman gushes about how much playing Dr. Helen Sharpe has meant to her over the years and expresses her gratitude to the writers and fans for supporting her across four seasons.
During a conversation with TV Insider, executive producer Peter Horton said they didn’t want to write Agyeman’s character out of the show, but Agyeman had already told them she was considering leaving at the end of season 3. She chose to stay on for a fourth season, but they set it up so she could potentially exit ahead of season 5 if she chose to.
“Her spirit around that is not contentious or frictional at all. It was just her preference for her future and her career choices. We adore her, she adores us, she misses us, we miss her. It wasn’t a thing where she was just miserable and deciding whether to stick around. It was a harmonious sort of thing. We love her. She’s a phenomenal actress, and we just wanted as much of her as we could have gotten,” Horton adds.
Agyeman’s last episode was the season 4 finale, “I’ll Be Your Shelter.” She also “appears” in two season 5 episodes, but her appearances in both cases are almost definitely re-used footage as Agyeman was not credited for either instance. Her character factors into Max’s storyline prominently in season 5, but as far as we know, Agyeman didn’t come back to film anything new.
In the show, Helen returns to London to reconnect with her mother and to help the hospital where she did her residency. At the end of season 4, Helen ultimately leaves Max at the altar and chooses to stay in London. The season 5 premiere starts with Max struggling to move on from his relationship and thinking about all the times they spent together, wondering if he missed signs that she was unhappy.
